Documentary about the last attack of Our Lady of Salvation Church in Iraq - One of the hostages who survived this attack tells what happened at the church وثائقي حول تفجير كنيسة سيدة النجاة الأخير في العراق - إحدى الرهائن التي نجت من الهجوم تروي ما حصل داخل الكنيسة
Translation made by Better iraq web site author : Laith.
The guy is talking about the attack on Sayedat Al-Najat church in Baghdad on October 31, 2010 through an interview with a Christian channel NourSat in the middle east
His son got killed in that attack, he is explaining what he saw during the time he spent outside waiting for his family to get rescued, the 2 girls around him are his daughters who both were next to their brother (the guys son, and his young child) (who both got killed).
His son called him at 5:15PM when the attackers went into the church so he told his son to hide. At 5:30 he called his son again and the son said that the attackers are shooting randomly and killing people, and the father heard the shooting as a background noise during the phone call, this was the last time he was able to speak to his son.
He made it to the church at 6:00 an Iraqi officer helped him get close to the church. He is explaining that the smoke was going out of the church and the police and the army was around there by the hundreds but they were just sitting and doing nothing, in fact he was saying that it looked like they were chitchatting as if nothing happened.
He is saying that from 6:00PM till 8:30 there were killing inside the church while the army and police outside doing Nothing, they were just standing there, every 15 minutes there would be shooting and then quite.
He said I told the officers that I know the back stairs of the church and can help you and get you in but no one listened. He said till the terrorist finished all their ammunition , nothing was done, the officers were sitting as if they cared less.
He said if the Minister of defense or the Minster of interior family were Christians would of they waited that long, He said most of the top ranking officers were doing nothing , just sitting around and chit chatting, and they even told him to not get aggravated (its only 20 people in the church), he got furious as he have (8 of his family members inside) and told them "In the western world they negotiate and try to save one person life and you tell me to be quiet for only 20 people" , he mentioned that there were hundreds inside the church (the estimated number was 120 ).
Till the SWAT team arrived at 9:00 PM nothing was done by either the police nor the army, while the terrorist were kept killing people, he said even when the SWAT came and went into the church the terrorist did not have any ammunition anymore and even when they went in, it was a mess and they may have killed even more innocent people.
And above all that they said that after the SWAT finished they just left and also the army and the police, they did not even help in clearing the church from the bodies, the only help came from the ministry of health as the ambulances were taking people to the hospitals, otherwise till 1:00 AM there were no one helping to move the bodies.
He is saying also that there is even probability that some terrorist made it out with the people.
He says the we are the Christian in Iraq is second class citizen, that's why they did not care. He was getting very angry at the government and how some people look at Iraqi Christians as a tool for the American in Iraq, and he said that him and his grandparents and his great great great grandparents are from Iraq "the American did not bring us here, this land is our land as much as it's for any other Iraqi."

Witness… till Martyrdom
Witness… till Martyrdom
Calamity shook us as well as Christians everywhere especially with the martyrdom of Fr. Saer who used to appear on Tele Lumiere and visit it. Fr. Saer was killed in a bomb attack at Our Lady of Deliverance Church in Baghdad, when he was trying to protect the believers inside the church, opening his arms and making the sign of the cross. His heart full of God’s presence was hit by a bullet. So, he died immediately with his brother who ran to save him but wasn’t spared from the criminal hands. Both were martyred between their mother’s arms who embraced them but she was also wounded, feeling now bitter pains in the hospital. Tele Lumiere’s staff visited the house of the martyrs’ sisters in Lebanon, met with them and relatives, shared with them sincere and moving moments, witnessing a deep faith till martyrdom.

Iraq - Witness of the Church Attack
Iraq - Witness of the Church Attack
The Syriac Catholic Patriarchate in Lebanon
The Syriac catholic Patriarchate in Lebanon was shocked by the barbaric attack against our brother country Iraq, affecting a church in Baghdad. Everybody, the Patriarch, the Clergy and people condemned strongly this criminal act committed by a group of terrorists againSt Innocents who were praying and worshipping God at Our Lady of Deliverance, Karrada. Kept as hostages, some were killed, others wounded. Therefore, the patriarchate calls upon the Iraqi government and the Interior Security Forces to impose their authority and strict security measures, to protect the churches and worship places of all religions. It asks as well the Iraqi government and the United States to protect the minorities wherever they were especially the peaceful Christians in Iraq.
Patriarch Emmanuel III Delli
The Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Emmanuel III Delli decries this criminal act committed against their church in Iraq, considering that this painful situation filled everybody with sadness not only Christians but also Muslims, underlining that whoever committed this crime doesn’t believe in God, neither in love or fraternity. Then, His Beatitude prayed for the martyrs, asking God to illuminate the way of the killers so they won’t commit other crimes that will be marked in history.
The Association of the Children of Mary, the Queen of Peace
The Lawyer Adib Zakhour, the association Vice-President condemned, in the name of the association, this brutal crime killing Iraqi Christian locals that are deep-rooted in their countries and they are innocents, including priests, or women or children. Zakhour addressed the killers reminding them of Omar Ben Khattab who led the Islamic invasions, and refused but abstained from entering the church in Jerusalem, or turning it into a mosque, forbidding its followers and Muslims from entering. So, they prayed out, respecting the Christian religion and the Church. His Beatitude called them to act like this and ask the true Muslims to protect the Church and the Iraqi government to maintain peace in all the Christian and Muslim worship sites.
Centrality of the Eastern Christians
The Centrality of the Eastern Christians condemned “the storming into the church of Karrada Quarter in Iraq, keeping the priests and believers as hostages, violating their history, beliefs, freedom, religious and human rights”. In addition, it called “the Iraqi political security and spiritual authorities to take matters firmly in hand, protect the minorities in Iraq, the East, pursuit the killers and punish them. As well, the international institutions, such as the United Nations, the Human Rights Organizations should impose serious and effective measures to protect the worship sites in the Arab East. Moreover, the Eastern Christians should take Matthew Gospel as an example, in which the Christ gave blessings to all who are persecuted on the Mount Sermon, asking them to feel happy especially when they are persecuted and face challenges.
Bishop Ibrahim Ibrahim
The Bishop of St Thomas Chaldean Diocese in USA, Ibrahim Ibrahim condemned the incident at Our Lady of Deliverance Church in Baghdad, asking “how can any religion permit the killing, in cold blood, of innocents who are praying inside a church?” In an interview with Tele Lumiere through the program “Challenges” with Charbel Zwein last Monday, H.E. mentioned that the terrorist attacks against Christians never happened in Iraq or against the Christians unless with the US occupation of Iraq, hoping that these attacks end with their definitive withdrawal. As well, Bishop Ibrahim accused the extremists of not being true Muslims.
Bishop George Saliba
Through a telephone call to the program “Challenges”, the Syriac Orthodox Bishop of Mount Lebanon expressed his concern towards the incidents in Iraq, considering this act as barbaric, and too far from the Muslim religion. H.E. called the Iraqi government to activate its work in order to protect the Christians in Iraq.
The Supreme Council of the Roman Catholic Community
In a communiqué, the Supreme Council of the Roman Catholic Community decried the act of keeping the believers at Our Lady of Deliverance in Baghdad as hostages, killing a group of them inside the church. As well, it mentioned that the criminals are taking the worship sites to commit their brutal crimes from which the Christian innocents are suffering.” Then, the council called the International Community that is watching these tragedies to move, asking “the Iraqi government to assume its responsibility in order to protect its citizens. Enough killing and displacing the Iraqi Christians!
Sheikh Abd el-Amir Kabalan
The vice-president of the Supreme Shiite Islamic Council Sheikh Abd el-Amir Kabalan described the offence against the church in Karrada, Baghdad as “a barbaric act that is not justified absolutely. Islam is innocent of this shameful act because it is a religion of tolerance and mercy. This barbaric act damages the reputation of Islam and Muslims. Sheikh Kabalan called the Christians in Iraq “to be attached to their land and the worship sites” considering that “this barbaric act is a colonial industry aiming to sow sedition and challenges.
Our Iraqi Christian brothers should be patient, not surrender to people who are fighting indirectly Islam and Christianity. We should all work for the sake of our people to preserve them, and keep far seditions and conspiracies.

NEW YORK, NOV. 12, 2010 (Zenit.org)
NEW YORK, NOV. 12, 2010 (Zenit.org).- The attack on the Syriac Catholic Cathedral in Baghdad Iraq was the "worst possible nightmare," and one that isn't quite over, says the Holy See's representative at the United Nations.
Archbishop Francis Chullikatt, permanent observer of the Holy See to the United Nations, said this tonight in New York City's Church of the Holy Family -- located one block away from the United Nations -- during a special evening prayer service for the victims of the Oct. 31 attack.
The Holy See's Mission, in conjunction with the Syriac Catholic Diocese of Our Lady of Deliverance and the Archdiocese of New York, organized the event on behalf of the 58 victims who died in the attack, and the more than 100 who were left wounded. Also in attendance was Bishop Yousif Habash, the Syriac Catholic bishop for the United States and Canada.
Archbishop Chullikatt had been the apostolic nuncio to Iraq and Jordan for the last four years until arriving in New York two months ago to fill his new post at the United Nations. His former residence in Baghdad was only a short distance from the cathedral, and he knew the priests who were murdered -- Father Thaer Abdal and Father Wassim Al-Qas Boutrus -- as well as other victims.
In his opening remarks he lamented that some of the families who lost loved ones on that day have been subject to further attacks on their homes.
"What happened on Oct. 31 is the worst possible nightmare," he said. "And the nightmare is not over. Some of the same families who lost loved ones then, have in the meantime, suffered further violent attacks on their homes. The situation is intolerable."
"We all are saddened to hear of places of worship being attacked," the archbishop continued. "We are especially outraged by these heinous acts when they are perpetrated for the sake of eradicating a religion from a particular place in God’s creation, when our brothers and sisters are killed just because of their faith. That is never the way to spread faith in God.
He concluded with an impassioned plea for peace and reconciliation: "Love your enemies. Pray for those who persecute you."
The archbishop said that not only do the dead and their families need prayers, but also those assembled need to pray "so that our hearts do not grow bitter and so that we can do our share in building a world that values and promotes reconciliation, harmony, love and peace among peoples, nations and religions."
In the program for the event, the names of all the martyrs of Our Lady of Deliverance were published. Here are the names as they appeared:

In honor of the 52 Catholics killed during prayer at Our Lady of Salvation Catholic Church) in Baghdad, Iraq,
Words from the Hymn:
We honor you with hymns O Mother of God, you are the pride of the whole earth, because the Word of God whom the Father sent, chose to take His human body from you. The generations call you blessed, all nations and people’s honor you and ask for mercy by your prayers. You are a generous earth in which plants of joy always grow.
