Thursday Prayer for Priests - June 4, 2009
Dear Friends,
As the beginning of the Year of the Priests approaches on June 19th, may I suggest having a Mass offered, possibly monthly, in your respective parishes, for the intentions of priests, seminarians and religious. God bless you for your prayers.
Thursday prayer ~
My God and Father, in response to the word of your Son on the Mount of Olives, "Watch and pray with me," we ask you to accept us as special helpers for your priests, on behalf of whom, we offer you each Thursday as a sacrifice of love.
With a fervent desire of being such a helper of priests, I offer you, Father, in complete confidence, each Thursday as a sacrifice of love on behalf of all priests. Take this sacrifice of my poor love and transform it in your Heart into the wine for the Chalice of Strength. Then, Father, send your angels out with this chalice to all priests! Amen.
Prayer for Priests ~
Lord Jesus, you have chosen your priests from among us and sent them out to proclaim your word and to act in your name. For so great a gift to your Church, we give you praise and thanksgiving. We ask you to fill them with the fire of your love, that their ministry may reveal your presence in the Church. Since they are earthen vessels, we pray that your power shine out through their weakness. In their afflictions let them never be crushed; in their doubts never despair; in temptation never be destroyed; in persecution never abandoned. Inspire them through prayer to live each day the mystery of your dying and rising. In times of weakness send them your Spirit, and help them to praise your heavenly Father and pray for poor sinners. By the same Holy Spirit put your word on their lips and your love in their hearts, to bring good news to the poor and healing to the broken-hearted. And may the gift of Mary your mother, to the disciple whom you loved, be your gift to every priest. Grant that she who formed you in her human image, may form them in your Divine Image, by the power of your Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Amen

Thursday Prayer for Priests - June 11, 2009
Dear Friends,
I have so much wonderful information about the upcoming Year for Priests, so I'll try to spread it out a bit. Following the prayer, for those who wish to read it, is a beautiful letter
written by the prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, A Year of Prayer by Priests, With Priests and for Priests. Thank you for your love and prayers for our priests. That love and prayer will return to you a hundredfold.

O Jesus, Good Shepherd, raise up in all parish communities, priests and deacons, religious, consecrated lay people and missionaries according to the needs of the whole world, which you love and want to save.
We entrust to you in a particular way our parish community; create in it the spiritual atmosphere of the first Christians in order that it may be a cenacle of prayer where we lovingly receive the Holy Spirit and his gifts.
Assist our pastors and all consecrated souls. Guide the steps of those who have generously welcomed your call and prepared themselves for Holy Orders or the profession of the evangelical counsels.
Direct your loving gaze to the many well-disposed young people and invite them to follow you. Help them to understand that only in you they can achieve their fulfillment.
We entrust these great desires of your Heart to the powerful intercession of Mary, Mother and model of all vocations, and beg you to sustain our faith in the certainty that the Father will listen to what you yourself have instructed us to ask for. Amen

A Year of Prayer by Priests, With Priests and for Priests
VATICAN CITY, MAY 27, 2009 (Zenit.org). - Here is the text of the letter Cardinal Cláudio Hummes, prefect of the Congregation for the Clergy, wrote ahead of the Year for Priests, which will begin June 19.
* * *
Dear Priests,
The Year for Priests, announced by our beloved Pope Benedict XVI to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the death of the saintly Curé of Ars, St. John Mary Vianney, is drawing near. It will be inaugurated by the Holy Father on the 19th June, the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the World Day of Prayer for the Sanctification of Priests. The announcement of the Year for Priests has been very warmly received, especially amongst priests themselves. Everyone wants to commit themselves with determination, sincerity and fervor so that it may be a year amply celebrated in the whole world -- in the Dioceses, parishes and in every local community -- with the warm participation of our Catholic people who undoubtedly love their priests and want to see them happy, holy and joyous in their daily apostolic labors.
It must be a year that is both positive and forward looking in which the Church says to her priests above all, but also to all the Faithful and to wider society by means of the mass media, that she is proud of her priests, loves them, honors them, admires them and that she recognizes with gratitude their pastoral work and the witness of the their life. Truthfully priests are important not only for what they do but also for who they are. Sadly, it is true that at the present time some priest have been shown to have been involved in gravely problematic and unfortunate situations. It is necessary to investigate these matters, pursue judicial processes and impose penalties accordingly. However, it is also important to keep in mind that these pertain to a very small portion of the clergy. The overwhelming majority of priests are people of great personal integrity, dedicated to the sacred ministry; men of prayer and of pastoral charity, who invest their entire existence in the fulfillment of their vocation and mission, often through great personal sacrifice, but always with an authentic love towards Jesus Christ, the Church and the people, in solidarity with the poor and the suffering. It is for this reason that the Church is proud of her priests wherever they may be found.
May this year be an occasion for a period of intense appreciation of the priestly identity, of the theology of the Catholic priesthood, and of the extraordinary meaning of the vocation and mission of priests within the Church and in society. This will require opportunities for study, days of recollection, spiritual exercises reflecting on the Priesthood, conferences and theological seminars in our ecclesiastical faculties, scientific research and respective publications.
The Holy Father, in announcing the Year in his allocution on the 16th March last to the Congregation for the Clergy during its Plenary Assembly, said that with this special year it is intended “to encourage priests in this striving for spiritual perfection on which, above all, the effectiveness of their ministry depends”. For this reason it must be, in a very special way, a year of prayer by priests, with priests and for priests, a year for the renewal of the spirituality of the presbyterate and of each priest. The Eucharist is, in this perspective, at the heart of priestly spirituality. Thus Eucharistic adoration for the sanctification of priests and the spiritual motherhood of religious women, consecrated and lay women towards priests, as previously proposed some time ago by the Congregation for the Clergy, could be further developed and would certainly bear the fruit of sanctification.
May it also be a year in which the concrete circumstances and the material sustenance of the clergy will be considered, since they live, at times, in situations of great poverty and hardship in many parts of the world.
May it be a year as well of religious and of public celebration which will bring the people -- the local Catholic community -- to pray, to reflect, to celebrate, and justly to give honor to their priests. In the ecclesial community a celebration is a very cordial event which expresses and nourishes Christian joy, a joy which springs from the certainty that God loves us and celebrates with us. May it therefore be an opportunity to develop the communion and friendship between priests and the communities entrusted to their care.
Many other aspects and initiatives could be mentioned that could enrich the Year for Priests, but here the faithful ingenuity of the local churches is called for. Thus, it would be good for every Dioceses and each parish and local community to establish, at the earliest opportunity, an effective program for this special year. Clearly it would be important to begin the Year with some notable event. The local Churches are invited on the 19th June next, the same day on which the Holy Father will inaugurate the Year for Priests in Rome, to participate in the opening of the Year, ideally by some particular liturgical act and festivity. Let those who are able most surely come to Rome for the inauguration, to manifest their own participation in this happy initiative of the Pope.
God will undoubtedly bless with great love this undertaking; and the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of the Clergy, will pray for each of you, dear priests.

Re: Every Thursday Prayer for Priests
Dear Friends,
I am pleased to announce a beautiful new website created by a few of our faithful prayer warriors. It is with great gratitude to them and the Holy Spirit for giving us this tool to more fully participate in the Year of Priests. We invite you to participate in forty days of prayer and fasting beginning on June 19, the Feast of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. The last nine days of prayer and fasting will be the novena to St. John Vianney culminating on August 4th.
The website is www.yearofthepriests.com and I cannot more strongly encourage taking a look at it. Under the Links and Resources tab you can find the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops site with even more information. You can click on Indulgence on the tab to the left of that site for the particulars of the plenary indulgence offered to priests, lay people and our homebound. We pray to St. John Vianney, patron of priests, for his intercession and prayers.
My God and Father, in response to the word of your Son on the Mount
of Olives, "Watch and pray with me," we ask you to accept us as special
helpers for your priests, on behalf of whom, we offer you each Thursday as
a sacrifice of love.
With a fervent desire of being such a helper of priests, I offer you, Father,
in complete confidence, each Thursday as a sacrifice of love on behalf of
all priests. Take this sacrifice of my poor love and transform it in your Heart
into the wine for the Chalice of Strength. Then, Father, send your angels
out with this chalice to all priests! Amen.
My God, I pray for all your priests and beseech you to sanctify them. Let them love
their sacrifice deeply so that they may live it lovingly.
I beg you, grant them obedience, a spirit of detachment, a chastity which is constant and true, a spirit of self-denial, humility, sweetness, zeal and dedication.
I beg you that all those who may approach them may leave them with a greater
love for you. My God, I pray that through them your kingdom on earth may grow and
be strengthened. O Jesus, I promise with all my heart to sacrifice myself with you.
Amen. -Canon Formingao

Prayer prayed for all priests, offered to God united with His Son with all the Masses said throughout the world today.
The Year of the Priest
June 22nd, 2009
The Church has begun the Year of the Priest. At Priests for Life, we focus on how priests are, by definition, heralds of the Gospel of Life. By saying mass, the priest brings us the victory of life over death. He carries out his ministry in the person of Christ, who is the Resurrection and the Life. The priest teaches the way of life that gives priority to the poor and vulnerable – and none are more vulnerable than the unborn. The priest is called to mobilize and lead the faithful to work to build the Culture of Life. In the sacrament of Penance, the priest heals the wounds of the culture of death. Priests need our prayers and encouragement each day. Assure them that they have yours, so they can be strong and faithful.
–Fr. Frank
Amen.

Re: Every Thursday Prayer for Priests

Thank you for praying for priests. It's important we continue to pray for them.
O Jesus, our great High Priest,
Hear my humble prayers on behalf of the Pope, all Cardinals, all Bishops, all priests.
Give them a deep faith
a bright and firm hope
and a burning love
which will ever increase
in the course of their priestly life.
In their loneliness, comfort them
In their sorrows, strengthen them
In their frustrations, point out to them
that it is through suffering that their souls are purified,
and show them that they are needed by the Church,
they are needed by souls,
they are needed for the work of redemption.
O loving Mother Mary, Mother of Priests,
take to your heart your sons who are close to you
because of their priestly ordination,
and because of the power which they have received
to carry on the work of Christ
in a world which needs them so much.
Be their comfort, be their joy, be their strength, and especially help all priests
to live and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy.
Amen.

Re: Every Thursday Prayer for Priests
Prayer for Parish Priests

Dear Saint John Vianney, your childhood dream was to be a Priest, to win souls for God. You endured years of toil and humiliation to attain the Priesthood. You became a Priest truly after God's own heart, outstanding in humility and poverty; prayer and mortification. Totally devoted to the service of God's people. The Church has exalted you as model and patron saint of all Parish Priest, trusting that your example and prayers will help them to live up to the high dignity of their vocation to be faithful servants of God's people, to be perfect imitators of Christ the Savior Who came not to be served but to serve, to give His Life in ransom for many.
Pray that God may give to His Church today many more Priests after His own Heart. Pray for all the Priests under your patronage, that they may be worthy representatives of Christ the Good Shepherd. May they wholeheartedly devote themselves to prayer and penance; be examples of humility and poverty; shining models of holiness; tireless and powerful preachers of the Word of God; zealous dispensers of God's Grace in the Sacraments. May their loving devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist and to Mary His Mother be the Twin Fountains of fruitfulness for their ministry. Amen.

Re: Every Thursday Prayer for Priests
Dear Friends,
Greetings and blessings to you this July day (where did June go?!). I again thank you for your gift of prayer for our priests. For those interested, here are beautiful rosary intentions for priests www.cureprayergroup.org/rosaryforpriests.htm This is just one of the great resources found on www.yearofthepriests.com. Remember to share this with your contacts!
Amen.
A Prayer for Priests
Lord Jesus, we your people pray to You for our priests. You have given them to us for our needs. We pray for them in their needs.
We know that You have made them priests in the likeness of Your own priesthood. You have consecrated them, set them aside, anointed them, filled them with the Holy Spirit, appointed them to teach, to preach, to minister, to console, to forgive, and to feed us with Your Body and Blood.
Yet we know, too, that they are one with us and share our human weaknesses. We know too that they are tempted to sin and discouragement as we are, needing to be ministered to, as do we, to be consoled and forgive, as do we. Indeed, we thank You for choosing them from among us, so that they understand us as we understand them, suffer with us and rejoice with us, worry with us and trust with us, share our beings, our lives, our faith.
We ask that You give them this day the gift You gave Your chosen ones on the way to Emmaus: Your presence in their hearts, Your holiness in their souls, Your joy in their spirits. And let them see You face to face in the breaking of the Eucharistic bread.
We pray to You, O Lord, through Mary the Mother of all priests, for Your priests and for ours. Amen.

Thursday Prayer for Priests - July 23, 2009
Dear Friends,
In addition to our weekly prayer, I would like to remind you that an important Novena to St. John Vianney (patron saint of priests) begins on July 27th and ends August 4th (the feast day of St. John Vianney). This is a beautiful gift we can offer for our priests. The link for the novena is here: http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/novena/vianney.htm

Dear Lord, we pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your priests
and through her intercession strengthen them for their ministry. We pray that Mary
will guide your priests to follow her own words, "Do whatever He tells you" (Jn 2:5).
May your priests have the heart of St. Joseph, Mary's most chaste spouse. May the
Blessed Mother's own pierced heart inspire them to embrace all who suffer at the foot
of the cross. May your priests be holy, filled with the fire of your love seeking nothing
but your greater glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.

Prayer for Priests - To Be Said to Saint John Vianney Who Composed It
Pray that God may give to His Church today many more Priests after His Own Heart. Pray for all Priests under thy patronage, that they may be worthy representatives of Christ the Good Shepherd. May they wholeheartedly devote themselves to prayer and penance; by examples of humility and poverty; shining models of holiness; tireless and powerful preachers of the Word of God; zealous dispensers of God's Grace in the Sacraments. May their loving devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist and to Mary His Mother be the Twin Fountains of fruitfulness for their ministry. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR PRIESTS
By the late John J Cardinal Carberry
Keep them; I pray Thee, dearest Lord.
Keep them, for they are Thine
The priests whose lives burn out before
Thy consecrated shrine.
Keep them, for they are in the world,
Though from the world apart.
When earthly pleasures tempt, allure --
Shelter them in Thy heart.
Keep them and comfort them in hours
Of loneliness and pain,
When all their life of sacrifice
For souls seems but in vain.
Keep them and remember, Lord,
they have no one but Thee.
Yet, they have only human hearts,
With human frailty.
Keep them as spotless as the Host,
That daily they caress;
Their every thought and word and deed,
Deign, dearest Lord, to bless.

Amen

Re: Every Thursday Prayer for Priests
These Priests stay active into their 90s, doing what they have been doing since they were in their 20s – and enjoying it still? Our retired priests continue to celebrate Mass and undertake other sacramental ministry, serving the Church until they are forced by poor health to slow down. And even then, they continue to offer their prayers for the many people they have served in this Archdiocese, and people in need around the world. (Northern California Archdiocese)
