Social encyclical delayed again - WORLD ECONOMIC CRISIS FORCES A NEW LOOK
Caritatas in Veritate, the long-awaited social encyclical, was due to make its appearance in April. Early in February, Bishop Giampaolo Crepaldi , the secretary of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, told the Zenit news agency that the encyclical, which has been expected for over a year, would handle the same themes advance by Pope Paul VI in Populorum Progressio.
But later in the month, during a meeting with priests of the Diocese of Rome on February 26, Pope Benedict XVI revealed that the publication of the encyclical has been set back again, so that the text can be amended to take into account the current worldwide economic crisis. Unless the encyclical deals "competently with the economic reality, it cannot be credible, " he said. We "must denounce" the global economic system, the Pope said, "with courage, but also in concrete terms, because moralizing will not help if it is not supported by an understanding of reality, which also will help us understand what can be done concretely to change the situation.
Pope Benedict said that greed is the basis of the economic crisis and added, "Justice cannot be created only with economic reforms, which are necessary, but it also requires the presence of just people."
