PROCLAMATION TO CANONIZE BROTHER ESTEPHAN NEHME

With the chiming of the bells in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican, and on the eye of Blessed Palm Sunday at 12 o’clock Noon, a proclamation has been issued by Pope Benedictus to canonize Brother Estephan Nehme, son of the Lebanese Monastery, and to publish the approval of the miracle addressed to him. Pope Benedictus’decision has been published in the “L’Osservatore Romano”, the official newspaper of the Vatican, and in both television and published media; after receiving Father Angelo Amato, the president of the beatification committee in Rome who eventually met with Father Boulos Azzi, head of the Maronite beatification committee on Monday 29th of March, 2010. Preparations for the celebrations in Lebanon are set to start by the end of June this year. Joy has filled Lebanon, the Maronite church and monasteries, who thank God for the new canonized father, who will be blessed along with St. Charbel, St. Rafka, and St. Nehmatallah Kassab el Hardini. This important decision by the Pope, right before Blessed Easter is a precious spiritual gift to the Church of Lebanon and to the Maronites and the Church in whole, in a time when the Eastern Churches are preparing for the Bishop’s Synodus in October. Brother Estephan lived an exemplary life of a devoted and loving monk filled with devotions and sacrifices for others. His followers began the preparations for the celebration in June by putting up the special program by his tomb in St. Kibriyanos and Yustina’s convent in Kfifan, Lebanon.

On the eve of Christmas and in the midst of security incidents and political developments, the Lebanese people received a Christmas gift from Pope Benedicts XVI by honoring Brother Estephan Nehme Al-Lehfedi to become officially on the road to sainthood that was traveled by Charbel, Hardini & Rafqa.

Who is Brother Estephan Nehmeh?
Born in March 1889 as the youngest child to Etephan Nehmé & Christina Badwi, both from Lehfed, Yousef had three brothers and two sisters. He received his elementary studies in Arabic and Syriac at an institution belonging to the Maronite Order in nearby Saqi Rashmayya. He was marked by being very quiet and calm; often retiring to prayers and adorations.
In 1905, and at the age of 16, Yousef headed to the monastry Of kfifane for the Maronite Order, to begin his monastic life. A week later, he was dressed the beginner’s robe and took a new name, Estephan, after his dad and in honor to his hometown’s patron saint. In Kfifane he was tutored by abbott Ignatious Dagher al- Tannouri.

After his ordination on August 23rd 1907, he was transferred to numerous monasteries, where he took charge of their fields, including Our Lady Of Mayfouq, St Anthonios Of Hoob in Tannourin, Mar Challita in Qattara, and to Byblos-Jbeil.
In the summer of 1938, his health quickly deteriorated, and led to his passing on August 30. He was buried at the Monastary of Kfifan. Twelve years later, his body was discovered uncorrupted. Ever since, people started visiting his burial site to pray and ask for his intercession.

His personality
Brother Estephan was distinguished for his simple and evangelical life. He spent his life serving the lord and his monastic brothers. He loved everyone without any discrimination, and was very instrumental in the First World War, in saving more than 12 children from famine.

Cures
Many cures in various parts of Lebanon and filed with the Monastery’s records, were credited to the intercession of Brother Estephan. Sister Claire Abou habib, Mr. Samir Halim Chewayri, Sister Marina Nehme (his niece), and others, testified to their cure after visiting Brother Estephan’s tomb. Doctors reports confirm the cure and the disappearance of the once existed terminal and cancerous illnesses. A recent cure credited to him is being currently studied in Rome, and might expedite his beatification Since the announcement of his veneration, Brother Estephan’s tomb witnesses continuous visits. Faithful from all over Lebanon come to pray and ask for his intercession to the lord. They hope for a quick advancement to his sainthood, and be in the company of the other Lebanese saints. Celebrations started on December 17 and concluded on December 30, 2007. Liturgies, recitals and other activities took place in Lehfed & Kfifane, to commemorate this historical event.
