What Makes Me Unique?

We are all born originals - why is it so many of us die copies?

- Edward Young

Each second we live is a new and unique moment of the universe, a moment that will never be again And what do we teach our children? We teach them that two and two make four, and that Paris is the capital of France. When will we also teach them what they are?

We should say to each of them: Do you know what you are? You are a marvel. You are unique. In all the years that have passed, there has never been another child like you. Your legs, your arms, your clever fingers, the way you move. You may become a Shakespeare, a Michelangelo, a Beethoven. You have the capacity for anything.

If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

- Henry David Thoreau

When we allow ourselves to exist truly and fully, we sting the world with our vision and challenge it with our own ways of being.

- Thomas Moore

Lord, you pour out blessings and lovingkindness on me before I can even ask. And you offer more than I could even conceive of asking. -King David, Psalm 21

Being Unique

Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else.

- Margaret Mead

I always knew I wanted to become somebody when I grew up. Now I realize I should have been more specific.

- Lily Tomlin

If we did all the things we are capable of doing we would literally astound ourselves.

- Thomas Edison

If God intended us all to be the same, he'd have given all of us braces on our legs. Momma always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them. We lived a quarter of a mile off Route 17.

- Forrest Gump (movie)

Adolescents sense a secret, unique greatness in thems.elves that seeks expression. They gesture towards the heart when trying to express any of this, a significant clue to the whole affair.

- Joseph Chilton Pear.ce, Evolutions End (book)

Neither in environment nor in heredity can I find the exact instrument that fashioned me, the a.non.y.muse roller that passed upon my life a certain intricate watermark whose unique design becomes visible when the lamp (key 9) of art is made to shine through life's foolscap (key 0).

- Vladimir Nabokov, Speak Memory (key 2)

No one has a monopoly on our unending story of nationhood;
no one has the manual for our nationhood.

- John Tamihere

The truly important things in life -- love, beauty, and one's own uniqueness -- are constantly being overlooked.

Pablo Casals

My great mistake, the fault for which I can't forgive myself is that one day I ceased my obstinate pursuit of my own individuality.

- Oscar Wilde

To be nobody but yourself in a world doing its best to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle any human can ever fight and never stop fighting.

- e. e. cummings

We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time and conditions of our death. But within this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we live.

The Paint Brush

I keep my paint brush with me wherever I may go
In case I need to cover up so the "Real Me" doesn't show.
I'm so afraid to show you ME, afraid of what you'll do.
You might laugh or say mean things.
I'm afraid I might lose you.

I'd like to remove all my paint coats to show the Real True Me.
But I want you to try and understand
I need you to like what you see.
So if you'll be patient and close your eyes,
I'll strip off my coats real slow.
Please understand how much it hurts to let the "Real Me" show.

Now all my coats are stripped off.
I feel naked, bare and cold.
If you still love me with all that you can see,
you are my friend, pure as gold.

I need to save my Paint Brush, though,
And hold it in my hand.
I want to keep it handy,
In case somebody doesn't understand.

So please protect me, my dear friend,
And thanks for loving me true.
But please let me keep my Paint Brush with me
Until I love ME too!
