Saturday is Our Lady's Day , I of III

It is generally accepted that Saturday devotion to Our Blessed Mother has its origins in this particular day – Holy Saturday. Although we can sometimes encounter slight variations in the stories which might come to us through tradition according to their sources, certain facts connected to Saturday being the particular day which belongs to Our Blessed Mother form a solid foundation :

Holy Saturday  is the first day of our Blessed Mother’s spiritual Motherhood.

Holy Saturday is the only day She was without Her Beloved Son – Jesus.

It would follow in a mystical way then, that Saturday – particularly first Saturdays , would be the day She seeks consolation in the hearts of us – who are also Her children.  Yet being always Jesus’ Mother too, it isn’t consolation for herself She seeks when she asks for reparation , but rather consolation for the Sacred Heart of Jesus , and today in particular, for His Eucharistic Heart ; confirmed by the Angel of Fatima –

Take and eat the Body and drink the Blood of Jesus Christ, horribly outraged by ungrateful men. Make reparation for their crimes and console your God."

From Fatima came Our Lady’s request  that we keep the First  Five Saturdays :
Here it is as explained in Sr. Lucia’s letter to her godmother

On November 1, 1927, Sister Lucy wrote to her godmother, Dona Maria de Miranda:

"I don't know if you already know about the reparatory devotion of the five Saturdays to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. As it is still recent, I would like to inspire you to practice it, because it is requested by Our dear Heavenly Mother and Jesus has manifested a desire that it be practiced. Also, it seems to me that you would be fortunate, dear godmother, not only to know it and to give Jesus the consolation of practicing it, but also to make it known and embraced by many other persons.
"It consists in this: During five months on the first Saturday, to receive Jesus in Communion, recite a Rosary, keep Our Lady company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the mysteries of the Rosary, and make a confession. The confession can be made a few days earlier, and if in this previous confession you have forgotten the (required) intention the following intention can be offered, provided that on the first Saturday one receives Holy Communion in a state of grace, with the intention of repairing for offenses against the Most Holy Virgin and which afflict Her Immaculate Heart.

These two Hearts which love each other so tenderly cannot help but reflect their unity and mutual care even in a particular devotion. So, as Our Lady desires that we should console Our Blessed Lord and Brother , He also wishes her to be honoured and consoled by the very same devotion. Our Lord demonstrates this in his explanation to Sr. Lucia of what the significance of 5 is concerning the First Saturdays :

WHY FIVE SATURDAYS ?

It is sometimes asked why Our Lady asked for Communions of reparation on five first Saturdays, instead of some other number. Our Blessed Lord answered that question when He appeared to Sr. Lucia May 29, 1930. He explained that it was because of five kinds of offenses and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary, namely: blasphemies against her Immaculate Conception, against her perpetual virginity, against the divine and spiritual maternity of Mary, blasphemies involving the rejection and dishonoring of her images, and the neglect of implanting in the hearts of children a knowledge and love of this Immaculate Mother.

Saturday is Our Lady's Day , II of III

The Church has honoured our Blessed Mother on Saturdays since early in Christian history - a short excerpt from a page by the University of Dayton entitled Saturday Devotions in Honor of Our Lady:

Historical Background of the Saturdays in Honor of Mary

To dedicate Saturday in honor of Mary is an ancient custom. It is based on a legendary account that Jesus appeared to Mary on the Saturday, the day after His death. He did so to reward her for her steadfast faith in his divinity, which did not waver under the Cross. Another strain of devotional thought explains that Divine Wisdom, becoming flesh of the Virgin Mary, rested (Saturday=Sabbath=day of rest) in Mary as on a bed.

One of the oldest customs traced to honoring Mary on Saturday in the Church of Rome took place on the Saturday before "Whitsunday" [White Sunday]. The newly-baptized members of the Church were led from St. John's baptistry of the Lateran to Mary's great shrine on the Esquilin, St. Mary Major [built under Pope Liberius 352-66]. St. John of Damascus' († 754) writings testify to the celebration of Saturdays dedicated to Mary in the Church of the East. The liturgical books of the ninth and tenth centuries contain Masses in honor of Mary on Saturday.

The Dictionary of Mary states:

Hence, Saturday acquired its great Marian tone and the existing fast on that day became associated with Mary. Today, the strongest trace of Mary's relationship with Saturday occurs in the Liturgy. Saturday is dedicated to Mary by a Mass or Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through these liturgical acts, Christians exalt the person of Mary in the action that renews the sacrifice of Christ and in the action that prolongs his prayer.

This liturgical attribution of Saturday to Mary was largely the work of Alcuin (735-804), the Benedictine monk who was "Minister of Education" at the court of Charlemagne and who contributed in a decisive manner to the Carolingian liturgical reform. Alcuin composed six formularies for Votive (That is, devotional Masses – one for each day of the week. And he assigned two formularies to Saturday in honor of Our Lady. The practice was quickly and joyously embraced by both clergy and laity. ...

The article goes on to include explanations of :

The Golden Saturdays
The Heart of Mary Saturdays and the Saturday Rosary
First Saturday Communion of Reparation
The Fifteen Saturdays of the Rosary
Saturday Practices in Honor of Mary

Even as the evidence becomes overwhelming that Saturday is Our Lady’s day , we should still mention Our Lady’s promise of the Sabbatine Privilege to those who wear her Scapular according to the conditions :

What is the Sabbatine Privilege?
Around the year 1251. the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock. She gave him the brown scapular and made a promise, "this shall be to you and all Carmelites a privilege, that anyone who dies clothed in this shall not suffer eternal fire: and if wearing it they die, they shall be saved."

Later, on March 3, 1322, a bull was issued by Pope John XXII regarding an additional grace from the use of the brown scapular. This was the Sabbatine Privilege. Mary appeared to him (before he was pope) and made an additional promise that the scapular wearer can be delivered from Purgatory on the first Saturday after their death, provided that the conditions of the privilege are met.

The conditions are 1) wear the brown scapular continuously; 2) lead a chaste life, and; 3) recite the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin every day. The third requirement can be substituted with a) observing the fasts of the Church and abstaining from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays; b) pray five decades of the rosary if permission is granted for this by a priest, or c) with permission from a priest, perform an act of charity.

To take full advantage of the blessings of the scapular, one must be enrolled in the Brown Scapular by a priest. One advantage for enrollment in the Brown Scapular is that you will not need to have any new scapulars you wear blessed by a priest. Saturday is Our Lady's Day , III of III

Saints Bernard, Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure are quoted on that same University of Dayton page
The great theologians of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, Sts. Bernard, Thomas and Bonaventure explained the dedication of Saturdays to Mary by pointing to the time of Christ's rest in the grave. Everyone else had abandoned Christ; only Mary continued to believe. This was her day!

So it is that the entire Church proclaims Saturday as Our Blessed Mother’s day:

The Church Militant in the Liturgy and in other Marian devotions has always proclaimed Saturday as Our Lady’s day.

The Church Suffering – in Purgatory through the Sabbatine Privilege and others proclaim that Saturday is Our Lady’s day.

The Church Triumphant confirms for us in so many revelations that Saturday is Mary’s day . . . and this Saturday – Holy Saturday is Hers above all others.

When the Apostles had been scattered and their faith shaken, the faith of the Church found sanctuary and remained ever-constant in the Immaculate Heart of Mary – Mother of the Church, and her hopeful expectation burned with a flame that remained steady despite all Her unspeakable sorrows.

Saturday is Our Lady's day - and it can be ours too if we stay close to Her . More than one saint , upon contemplating an image of Our Mother of Sorrows - the Blessed Virgin Mary, holding the sacred Body of Her Son upon being taken down from the cross . . .

Saturday is Our Lady's Day Sorrowfulmother

. . . has prayed that , upon their own death , they also could be found in the tender embrace of Our Blessed Mother's arms - close to Her Immaculate Heart . And why shouldn’t they – why shouldn’t we ? Each time we pray an Ave or a Rosary, even if we might be a little careless in saying it, Our Blessed Mother always takes the words ,
“Holy Mary , Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.”
most seriously.

Don’t have time for too much of those devotions today ?

We might still be able to pray one Ave or maybe a decade of the Rosary contemplating Jesus in Our Blessed Mother’s arms . Our Lady is a Mother above all – She is attentive to every one of Her children . Each of our souls is precious in Her eyes , so even our little efforts to honour or love Her don’t go unnoticed.

Today is a great day to give Her a consoling kiss.
