Tônio Tavares founded the Jesus Menino (Baby Jesus) Community in 1990 after being shocked by the neglect and abandonment suffered by disabled orphans. He says he does this work because it is "a special calling from God" - to make a home for these children,confirming, "If it wasn't for this perfect love of God's trust in me, I couldn't do it."
Most of the children he adopted are abortion survivors who've come through failed and botched abortions. While it is true they have been neglected, badly wounded and abandoned by both society and their families, Tônio says, according to Nestor Forster Jr. - U.S. Ambassador -Elect of Brazil, these children form the embassy of heaven on earth, adding, "It doesn't get any more pro-life than what Tônio does."
